What Was I Thinking!!

I'm back with another Shopping Our Stash challenge - and our theme this week is titled:  WHAT WAS I THINKING!  We're talking about one of those things (stamp, embellishment, die, whatever) that you just HAD to have - but it was SO not you - and you got it anyway!  I just imagine we all have things in our stash like this!  I know I do.  Find that item in your stash and then enter our challenge!!  Be sure and check out our blog and see all the wonderful creations by the DT - and what was "so not them"!

When I saw the Doily Die in the SU catalog last year, I thought to myself....I don't need that!  However, after seeing so many beautiful cards with this die, I just HAD to have it!  What was I thinking!!!!!

I know I spent at least three hours trying to get this baby cut out!  I have a Cuddlebug and I used every kind of sandwich known to mankind.  After "googling" it and looking up about ten different possibilities, I finally hit on one that "sorta" worked!  I don't know if I'll ever use this die again as it just does not want to cut out all those little holes!  Has anyone else had problems with this thing?

Anyway, I got it cut out and only used one half of it, added some pearls, embossed a couple of circles and heart, popped it up, and then added another pearl to the heart.  The sentiment is a very old one from SU that I haven 't used in forever.

I'll enter this in the challenges at Card Crafter's Circle (CAS) and Emergency Crafter's Challenge (Circles).

(Stay tuned for my {Pin}spirational Challenge post that will be coming up later this morning)

Thanks for stopping by...............and be sure and check out our Shopping Our Stash challenge!

Oh I could probably make cards all day if I had to use the "What Was I Thinking" items in my stash. I'm al glad to hear that I'm not the only one that has those items. Anyway you did a fabulous job on this card. Love the red and white and your pearls are just perfect for this doily. Enjoy your week. Totally busy week here but hopefully very soon I can join in with these challenges.

When I first saw your card I thought — what is she thinking not using the die — and then read the rest of the writeup and understand! Wish I had an answer, I have a couple that I don't use for the very same reason! But your card is absolutely beautiful even with the struggle and I love your use of the pearls!

I'm sooo glad I didn't buy this one. I have zero patience for things like this. I would have probably quit at 1/2 circle myself.

But IT LOOKS FABULOUS! I love the circle and heart on top, and all the pretty pearls. I also have the sentiment set somewhere. :) I think I have it in French, too. ;/

Oh my hat, your post had me giggling. I wrote something similar a while ago. I hate wasting money on items that I think I am going to need, but then never use it for whatever reason. Oh Lynn... despite you having struggled to cut the darn doily... it looks pretty good from here. A fabulous card. hugs Sharon x

Hi Lynn, first of all, your card is STUNNING! I love every detail about it. I am sorry that this die was giving you so much trouble. I have often gone through this kind of experience with some dies, so I can understand. At times I have experienced that there was a problem with the design of the die and even if I exchanged it the problem persisted.

I do hope you find a solution as I would LOVE to see the beauties that come out of this punch.

Off to see that masculine card now.

Love,

Monica xxx

You card turned out beautifully!! Did you try to add a shim to the die before cutting or there's a thin metal plate that sold for the Cuttlebug (but fits other machines) that's a perfect shim for all those intricate dies. I have a couple dies that all the little pieces don't want to cut out and this metal shim really did the job.

Welcome to my world of frustrating die cutting! LOL The latest one I bought gave me several hours of trials and many errors too, but I finally did get ONE cut! It was SO NOT worth the $$$!! I love how your card turned out though - it's really quite a beauty!

Beautiful card and love the crisp look of red and white together. Yes, that die is a bugger. I read a tip to cover the cutting side of the die itself with clear packing tape. It's supposed to help keep the tiny pieces from sticking.

This is beautiful and I hope you save the other half of the doily for another card! I've seen some complaints and tips for getting those little pieces cut out and decided not to buy the die. I had some Sizzix snowflakes that drove me crazy.

Gorgeous card...I had that die on my list but then went with something else for my required purchase that month..so glad I did because I have NO patience these days! Love this card though!

Your card is beautiful but if I had that much trouble with a die I would be irritated. You obviously have more patience than I. Vee xx

Such a pretty card! Love how you layered the circle and heart, and the pearls are just lovely!

I borrowed this die from my sister a while back, but didn't have any issues with getting it to cut with the big shot. The bits of paper are a different matter! If you roll the piece around a pencil, most of the pieces will fall out. A paper piercer can get the rest. I will agree that it's a bit of a pain, but very pretty!

Stunning card Lynn - have you tried putting greaseproof paper between the die and the card (shiny side to the die) the bits all come out very easily after that!! If something doesn't cut in my bug I just keep turning the die and adding shims...

The card turned out fantastically, Lynn! I have a couple of those really intricate dies and I find I have to run them through a couple or times, then turn the die a quarter turn and run it once or twice more, and sometimes turn it again and run it two or three times. That's the only way I've been able to make them work. Ah, but when they finally cut, they are so beautiful! :-D

That frustrating die made for a lovely card, Lynn, so I'm glad you stuck it out. I can sure understand why it would classify for this challenge after all that though. Beautiful red and white design, and I too love the pearls!

For all the frustration to cut it out -it sure did come out BEAUTIFUL! WOW! Love the addition of the pearls and embossed hearts and I do really love the 'love' sentiment how it scrolls from edge to edge!

ok, i think this one should be a "what was SU thinking?" b/c the c-bug is pretty much the most common machine out there and if it cannot be made to work, there's something WRONG with their die!!! having said that, i now am really leary of quickcutz b/c SOMETIMES they work and SOMETIMES not! (on the other hand, memory box, whose dies are suuuuuuuuuuuuper intricate AND quite thin and light, cut like CRAZY! i have no idea why ANY of the above is true but i do know this: YOUR CARD IS GLORIOUSLY BEAUTIFUL!!! ♥♥♥!

But you came up with the goods, even after all the wrangling with this die...haaa! It's a gorgeous creation and the little pearls are just darling.
Another comment mentioned the metal sheet by Cuttlebug....get one!...it works wonders with these intricate dies! Thanks so much for linking up to our CAS challenge at Card Crafter's Circle....good luck!

Absolutely fabulous! Simple and stylish!
Sometimes when my dies don't want to cut properly I just turn the die with the CS around and run it through the machine again. Or I add a layer of CS on top as a shim.
