Can't See the Forest for the Trees!

Did I get a little bit "busy" on this one or not! I can't find the image for all the patterned paper. You know, everyone (except me it seems) can mix patterned paper and it looks so pretty - but I do it and everything just kinda "get's lost" in the woods!! The more I worked on this card, the "busier" it got I think. I had it all finished and only had the one bottom piece of ribbon on it. It just seemed to need more, so I thought I'd add another piece of ribbon. Well, of course, I only had a small piece of that ribbon left (and was too lazy to run to town and get more) so instead of running it around the card I just tied a bow and attached it. It looked pretty good - and then I noticed it had an ink smudge right in the center where I tied it.............SO, I added a button to cover it up......Well, hello, if you add a button to one, you gotta add it to the other one too! So, hence the two bows and buttons. Ok, now it's finished.........and then, no, maybe it needs a sentiment! So, that got added.....Now what happened to that image....I can't seem to find it!!!!

Then everything got really strange......I'd walk by and look at the card and REALLY like it! Then an hour later I'd walk by again and say "oh my, that's horrid"! Anyway, here it is!

The image is from Mo's Digital Pencil (freebie) and I'm still not sure I like the digital's but thought I'd attempt a couple anyway.

Thanks for stopping by...................

Lynn

Your card making sounds like mine. It's often hard to decide when enough is enough. In my case though, I tend to go for not quite enough and it often seems to be missing "something". I do think the recipient of this card will be thrilled with it. It has a lot of cute details. I like the button/bows and that adorable image.

I learned my pattern mixing when I was a quilter trying to find pleasing combos of patterned fabric. The main key I think is to use only one multi-colored print. For the other prints, choose something more monochromatic that pulls a color out of the main print. Also keep scale in mind. If you have a large print, make the other prints you choose be either small or medium. Also, mix up the types of patterns. If you use a floral, pair that with a stripe or dot for contrast.

If you don't mind a little constructive criticism (and I hate the word criticism because I'm not putting your work down), I think why your card looks busy is because the two prints you chose are both multicolored and the same combo of colors. And both have about the same scale (size of the design elements) which compete for attention. I think that if you re-created this card and, leaving all other elements the same, just changed out the heart paper with something more monochromatic and with a smaller print (like small pink dots on a pink background) that it would make your image stand out more because there wouldn't be any bold pattern around the image to take your eye away from that focal point and the monochromatic paper wouldn't compete with the sentiment pattern next to it.

What a cute card! Mo's images are so adorable and fun to use. I wasn't sure about digital stamps, but I sure am addicted to them now. I even searched DT calls to feed the beast. LOL

I think this card is really cute and would never have noticed that the second ribbon didn't wrap around the card. Love both the ribbon and the buttons!
